Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading.
Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
Grab your current read and open to a random page:
* Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
* BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
* Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
As usual this week I am doing teasers from two different books.
My first teaser is from IF I TELL YOU…I’LL HAVE TO KILL YOU by Michael Robotham (Non-fiction)
Background: What is the secret to good crime writing? No one better to ask than a group of Australia’s leading crime writers. Their conclusions are fascinating, provocative, often surprising, and they are all drawn from the hard school of personal experience. What pieces of advice do the writers have in common? That there is no substitute for hard work!
The teaser is the opening line from the first essay ‘Keep the bodies coming’ by Shane Maloney:
“…So far I’ve killed around seventeen people. It’s hard to be completely sure without digging them up and counting them all, but I’ve been at it for a while now and it has to be in the high teens…”
The second teaser is from an eBook publication FRONTIER INCURSION by Leonie Rogers (YA Science Fiction)
Background: For Shanna, joining the Scout Corps had been a dream come true. The Scouts were charged with expanding their knowledge of Frontier, a hostile planet their ancestors had crash-landed on 300 years before. As the youngest in her class, Shanna struggles to find acceptance and respect amongst her older peers – a task made more difficult by the fact that she has not just one, but two of the colonists’ huge feline companions, their starcats.
On a routine patrol, she and the other cadets are swept up in the greatest challenge yet to be faced by the settlers of Frontier. Now they find themselves on the very frontline of a war they knew nothing about, and possibly the Federation of Race’s last chance against the hostile Garsal. Suddenly their world has changed, and in ways never dreamed of by Shanna and her fellow scouts.
The teaser is at the 27% point:
“…She had never travelled at night before; despite three hundred years of settlement on Frontier, the early loss of life, inclement weather and extraordinary wildlife had restricted human expansion, and it had taken all of those three hundred years to establish just three major settlements…”
