Title: Secondhand Spirits
Author: Juliet Blackwell
Genre: Paranormal Mystery
Opening lines: “…Witches recognise their own… ‘
Blurb: Lily Ivory is not your average witch. Her spell-casting powers tend to draw mischievous spirits while keeping normal humans at a distance. But now her vintage clothing store could give her a chance to make friends in San Francisco. Lily hopes for a normal life when she opens Aunt Cora’s Closet. With her magical knack for vintage fashion -she can sense vibrations of the past from clothing and jewellery – her store becomes a big hit. But when a client is murdered and children start disappearing from the Bay Area, Lily may be the only one who can unravel the crime.
My Thoughts: SECONDHAND SPIRITS came recommended to me by someone who shares my reading DNA and I was glad I followed up on her recommendation because I really enjoyed this book. In the first few pages we meet Aidan, a powerful local male witch who has a keen interest in Lily, what the interest is, and what he wants from Lily the reader, and Lily, is not to sure. However he gives her a welcome to the neighbourhood gift – a familiar. Not a kitten or a puppy like most witches mind you, but a gnome, a very ugly gnome! She names him Oscar and he turns himself into a pig whenever anyone comes into her shop so as not to blow his cover. Next to arrive is Max – Max is the love interest but he is not magical at all, he is a Myth buster and his role is to prove people like Lily don’t exist. Boy is he about to go through a steep learning curve! Through Lily he is going to come up against the real thing – magic, black magic and a wailing watery demon!
There are some lovely quirky characters to break the tension – and there is some nasty stuff going on!! There are red-herrings, magic where you wouldn’t expect it and a satisfactory twist in the tale – a few of the characters aren’t what they seem. Oh I do love it when that happens! Lily is a wonderful and believable character, despite her powers she has insecurities and doubts, but is smart, protective and resourceful. SECONDHAND SPIRITS is fast paced and entertaining and I am looking forwards to reading more of her work.
Rating: B – Great. I really enjoyed reading it and it is a book I will be recommending to all my friends.
