Title: Blood Song
Author: Rhiannon Hart
Blurb: When her sister becomes betrothed to a prince in a northern nation, Zeraphina’s only consolations are that her loyal animal companions are by her side – and that her burning hunger to travel north is finally being sated. Already her black hair and pale eyes mark her out as different, but now Zeraphina must be even more careful to keep her secret safe. Craving blood is not considered normal behaviour for anyone, let alone a princess. So when the king’s advisor, Rodden, seems to know more about her condition than she does, Zeraphina is determined to find out more. Zeraphina must be willing to sacrifice everything if she’s to uncover the truth – but what if the truth is beyond her worst nightmares?
My Thoughts: BLOOD SONG came recommended by my oldest daughter, and she gave me this copy to read after I read her review and demanded it. I loved Zeraphina, she is a really strong character (although sometimes she is just a plain stroppy and stubborn teen) who has a suspicion that her craving for blood may not be something she should share, so keeps it secret from her mother and sister. There is a very dark edge to the story, despite the witty repartee and laugh out loud scenes, something in the north is not very nice but it is calling seductively to Zeraphina. When a proposal of marriage comes from the north for her older sister Lilith, Zeraphina urges her sister to go and promises to accompany her. Of course in this fantasy world the south is cold and the north is warm and tropical – a perfectly normal state of affairs for those of us from down under. Zeraphina has managed to keep her secret cravings well hidden so it comes as a surprise that when she arrives at the northern court chief advisor Rodden appears to know just what she is hiding. Infuriately he won’t tell her anything so she is forced to snoop! So much sexual tension here as she tries to work out if he is a goodie or a baddie, but not too much as she IS only 16, also there are two more books in the series to follow. When the evil something from the north makes an appearance it is a very nasty pasty indeed – Llarmellins are ugly reptilian like creatures with very sharp teeth – blood sucking teeth! It also appears they want our little heroine; they also want to rule the world! Sigh – don’t all evil critters have that aim? I loved the adventure, the resolution and the fact that I already have book 2 in my hot little e-reader with the threat of book 3 coming out soonish. Some of the action is a little gory, but it is hard to dispatch blood sucking evil critters without some gore. The Llarmellins have a horrible weapon of mass destruction their own so it is only fair some gore is shed in exchange. I should mention at this stage that Zeraphina has two faithful companions an eagle named Griffin and a cat called Leap – both of whom are very much part of the story. As I said, I have book 2 – BLOOD STORM – on my e-reader which will not be too far away from being read. The final book in the trilogy BLOOD QUEEN has not been released yet – but shouldn’t be too far away. If fantasy, drama, mystery, humour, adventure and a smidgen of romance is your cup of tea then this story is for you.
Rating: A – Excellent. I could not put it down.
