Title: School Spirits
Author: Rachel Hawkins
Genre: YA Paranormal
Fifteen-year-old Izzy Brannick was trained to fight monsters. For centuries, her family has hunted magical creatures. But when Izzy’s older sister vanishes without a trace while on a job, Izzy’s mom decides they need to take a break. Izzy and her mom move to a new town, but they soon discover it’s not as normal as it appears. A series of hauntings has been plaguing the local high school, and Izzy is determined to prove her worth and investigate. But assuming the guise of an average teenager is easier said than done. For a tough girl who’s always been on her own, it’s strange to suddenly make friends and maybe even have a crush. Can Izzy trust her new friends to help find the secret behind the hauntings before more people get hurt?
I really, really loved the Hex Hall series so when I heard that a spin off book was about to be released I jumped at the chance to read an advanced copy. It took me a little while to get into it, but once I was hooked a chapter or so later, I really enjoyed it. SCHOOL SPIRITS can be read as a standalone if you have not previously read the Hex Hall series, however, author Rachel Hawkins obviously believes that all her readers would have read the first series so there is very little background information on who the Brannicks are and what Prodigium are. Izzy as a character is a strong, smart and high-spirited teenager. Even though she has been brought up to kick Prodigium backside, she has had very little contact with the real world and is totally oblivious to social norms and girly behaviour. When do you bump hips or link arms with your BGF? As for boys – they are a complete mystery to her! Dex is one of the boys in question but when she shakes hands with him there is a magical tingle – he is prodigium, but what sort? Still there is a ghost to be busted, humans to keep safe and secrets to uncover. Every single character in the book is there for a reason – no hanging threads or waste of page spaces here. SCHOOL SPIRITS is significantly different to the ‘Hex Hall’ series but it has lots going on in it, there is something for everyone. Family dram’s, adventure, mystery, twists, turns, humour, scary bits and romance that all build up to the big finale with one very angry ghost. I really liked Izzy, her character drove the story and pulled everything along with her. I will definitely be looking out for the next in the series to see where Rachel Hawkins is going to go with this.
Rating: B – Great. I really enjoyed reading it.
