Genre: Historical Paranormal Mystery
In the delightfully wicked follow-up to ‘Soulless’, Alexia Tarabotti is entangled once more in Victorian London’s supernatural mysteries. Alexia Tarabotti, the Lady Woolsey, awakens in the wee hours of the mid-afternoon to find her husband, who should be decently asleep like any normal werewolf, yelling at the top of his lungs. Then he disappears – leaving her to deal with a regiment of supernatural soldiers encamped on her doorstep, a plethora of exorcised ghosts, and an angry Queen Victoria. But Alexia is armed with her trusty parasol, the latest fashions, and an arsenal of biting civility. Even when her investigations take her to Scotland, the backwater of ugly waistcoats, she is prepared: upending werewolf pack dynamics as only the soulless can. She might even find time to track down her wayward husband, if she feels like it.
CHANGELESS is a historical steampunk mystery that has romance, humour and paranormal critters of all persuasions. Alexia has been married to Conell, a werewolf, for some three months when a crisis hits. For some reason all the paranormal beings in the London region become human. This normally happens when Alexia is around as she is soulless – but she is not responsible for this event. Vampires can’t bite, werewolves can’t change and the ghosts all disappear. The Queen is not amused. Alexia suspects it the humanisation has something to do with one of the recently returned regiments, and is possibly a new weapon, so heads off to Scotland on board an airship to investigate. On the way to Scotland she misses out on being poisoned, survives being thrown overboard and has to try and keep two love obsessed support characters apart. Then she gets to Scotland!
I love Alexia – she is such a strong and opinionated person with an enquiring mind and a great deal of intelligence. I love the Victorian world in which she lives, a strange mixture of wonderful mechanical gadgets and acceptance that the paranormal live among us along with strict adherence to the social order of the time. The mystery is eventually solved after a great adventure, lots of comical scenes and people dropping asleep everywhere. There are lots of twists and turns as Alexia tries to figure out who she can trust, as soon as the mystery is solved comes a cliff hanger!! Wow – so glad that I have access to the next book!!!
Rating: B – Great. I really enjoyed reading it.
