Title: Anne of Windy Poplars
Author: L.M. Montgomery
Genre: General Fiction
The Blurb: Anne Shirley has left RedmondCollege behind to begin a new job and a new chapter of her life away from Green Gables. Now she faces a new challenge: the Pringles. They’re known as the royal family of Summerside – and they quickly let Anne know she is not the person they had wanted as principal of SummersideHigh School. But as she settles into the cosy tower room at Windy Poplars, Anne finds she has great allies in the widows Aunt Kate and Aunt Chatty – and in their irrepressible housekeeper, Rebecca Dew. As Anne learns Summerside’s strangest secrets, winning the support of the prickly Pringles becomes only the first of her triumphs.
My Thoughts: I have to say that ANNE OF WINDY POPLARS slightly missed the mark for me. It just didn’t enchant me quite as much as the previous three in the series, and I can’t put my figure on why it didn’t. Written mostly in a series of letters to her fiancé Gilbert, Anne relates her struggles and solutions with various quirky characters around the small town. It is very uplifting to read and the writing is wonderfully descriptive; even poetic at times. I understand that the book was written later on in the series as readers pressed her to fill in some of the missing years between her finishing college and settling down as a mum and wife. It is still very heart warming to read – but looking forwards to moving on to the next book in the series.
Rating: C – very readable and enjoyable
