I am a bookaholic - That means I am incapable of walking into a bookshop without buying something. Or reading a blog without writing a title and author down in a list. Or joining in book reading challenges which encourage me to buy or borrow more books! So I have created this blog primarily to keep track of my thoughts about books I have read :) ***VIEWER WARNING*** The opinions expressed below are solely those of this reader and are not intended to hurt any other reader's (or Author's) feelings.

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading.

Grab your current read and open to a random page:

* Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
* BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
* Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

I am currently reading LOTS OF LOVE by Fiona Walker – the main character is Ellen and she is a surfer chick who has just split up with her long time boyfriend and has gone to a little English village to find out why her parent’s house hasn’t been sold. She soon finds out that the house has been lived in by vagrants and is in a mess, the garden a disaster. Ellen has had some humorous run-ins with the couple who are being paid to take care of the house and garden, and the real estate agent who is suppose to be selling it. She attended a charity auction with a drugged up hippy artist next door and wins herself 3 wishes from the drop dead gorgeous bad boy son of the lord of the manor, Spurs. Spurs turns up the next day and agrees to fix up the garden – and he and Ellen seem to have an instant attraction – but he has a really bad past, which includes time in jail. There are all sorts of quirky characters in the village and Ellen is finding out that selling the house is not going to be as straight forward as she thought

Here are my teasers:

Pg 26 “…The house smelt unloved and unlived-in – dusty and stale, with an unexpected, familiar undertone of beer, cigarettes and greasy food, like a pub; She soon found out why…”

Pg 186 “…One moment I was standing on two cantering nag’s rumps, the next I had a meter of fast moving chain spinning towards my face…”

Here is my reading summary for the week ending 22nd January 2012.

Each week I will give a short summary of the books I have finished and a bit of a blurb for each. I will also give you a sneak peek of all the books I am currently reading (as I never read just one book at a time) and I will also share any quotes that catch my eye.

A= Excellent Stuff

B= Really Good Read

C= Average

D= it was OK, a bit of a struggle to finish.

1. This week I have finished:

· Ghoul Interrupted by Victoria Laurie (Paranormal Mystery) – A

The sixth exciting installment of the Ghost Hunters Mystery series finds M.J., Heath and Gilley heading to New Mexico after M.J.’s spirit guide (and Heath’s grandfather), Sam Whitefeather, told her that an evil demon had been released from its prison and was bent on destroying, killing, every Whitefeather on the Pueblo, two have already been killed. The only way to stop it is to kill the person who has released it. Trouble is the Whitefeather tribe members don’t believe a word of it and all sorts of resistance is put up. The spooked up threesome have to do their own sleuthing to track down the evil critter and destroy it before any more Whitefeathers die. Deliciously scary, with the flamboyant Gilley providing the comic relief, the story is gripping and action packed. I am a huge fan of the series and I seem to keep saying at the end of each one – this is the best ever.

Liverpool Daisy by Helen Forrester (Historical Fiction) – D

This book just wasn’t really my cup of tea. Set in Liverpool in the 1930s it is about Daisy who turned to prostitution to buy health care for her sister-in-law. I have read other Helen Forrester books and really enjoyed them, this one was just an OK read and I struggled to finish it.

Ashes, Ashes by Jo Treggiari (YA Dystopian) – A

The end of the world is not only nigh – it has been and gone for Lucy. The sole survivor of her family after global warming caused the seas to rise, tsunami’s to hit and sent the weather wild. On top of that a mutant version of smallpox swept the world and killed millions of people and some animals, like cows. Sweepers search for plague victims, survivors hide away. Lucy has survived alone in the wilds of Central Park and hasn’t seen another human for over six months. Then she meets Aiden and learns that there are other survivors and that the sweepers may just be looking for her.

2. My Current reads:

The books I am currently reading are:

A soldier’s Tale by M.K. Joseph – Historical – a disturbingly haunting story set in WWII France – written by a New Zealander. A soldier stumbles across a woman living alone just as he arrives on the scene members of the resistance turn up to kill her for being a traitor. The soldier decides to stay a few days and keep the resistance away from her.

Lots of Love by Fiona Walker – Chick Lit – light and fluffy read about Ellen who is at a loose end after she breaks up with her boyfriend. She agrees to house-sit for her parents, who are trying to find a buyer for their idyllic cottage in the Cotswold village of Oddlode. Ellen goes to a village fundraiser and wins a mysterious lot of three wishes. These have been donated by Jasper Belling, the incredibly gorgeous hell-raising son of the local lord of the manor.

Cooking the Books by Kerry Greenwood – Mystery – The sixth in the series, Corinna Chapman, talented baker and reluctant investigator, is trying very hard to do nothing at all on her holidays, however she can’t just do nothing – she’s bored. So Corinna accepts an offer from a caterer friend to do the baking for the film set of a new soap called ‘Kiss the Bride’. Elsewhere in Melbourne a young woman is being unmercifully bullied by her corporate employers – employers who spend a lot of time cooking the books. You just know the two are going to collide and Corinna is going to be in the middle of it

3. Quote/s for the week

This week I have two quotes and a link.

The first is from page 147 of Ghoul Interrupted by Victoria Laurie:

“… It took us an hour to drop off Mrs Lujan’s luggage with Ari, who was taking her aunt in for the time being, and then to find a good hotel well away from the thick trees that could hide an eight-foot-tall, red-eyed, scaly-skinned demon. I wonder if AAA had a rating for that!…”

The second quote is from a blog I came across during the week, I think it is SO good:

“…I need a bossy little book that will insist I sit down and read it, and will summon me back from my inevitable distractions and command me to finish. A seductive novel that will tempt me to look at it, touch it, open it up. That will entice me visually with it’s good looks and engage me mentally and emotionally, making me feel things; coaxing me to keep going, even if I’m not in the mood. Even if I have a million other things to do. A compelling and persistent story that will slam me up against the couch and declare with authority, “Don’t move. Sit here and do this; I won’t take no for an answer. You are mine now, and I will take you places you’ve never been. You will not regret this; you’ll love it and I’ll have you begging for more…”

The link to the quote is here:

http://lisamm.wordpress.com/2011/02/27/the-sunday-salon-february-27-2011/

As an extra bonus here is another link I would like to share this week, it is to very good blog where the writer has explained what he expect from a book

I am reading GHOUL INTERRUPTED by Victoria Laurie, number six in the ghost hunter series. MJ and her boyfriend Heath can both talk to the dead, and have taken an bereavement break from filming for their new TV series ‘Ghoul Getters’ to return to New Mexico for the funeral of Heath’s favourite uncle killed horribly and unexpectedly. When they arrive they find out Heath’s aunt has also died under strange circumstances. MJ’s spirit guide, Sam Whitefeather (Heath’s late grandfather), warns MJ that someone is waging war against the family and has released a big nasty demon to kill all of the family members. Heath and MJ need to find out who has summoned the demon – and kill them. I love the series as despite its heart stopping spooky bits there are lots of light hearted banter, romance and mystery.

Here are my teasers:

Pg 63 – “…’Hello,’ Heath said from behind me. ‘Please, come in and make yourself comfortable while I sit here awkwardly half naked.’.…”

Pg 245 – “…Heath and I were both pinned to the seat by fear, not daring to move or utter a sound. Very slowly I moved my head to look at Heath, but caught a glimpse of his window instead. Something glistened in the dark before a read eye emerged; glowing and demonic, it glared at me with pure hatred…”

Here is my reading summary for the week ending 15th January 2012.

Each week I will give a short summary of the books I have finished and a bit of a blurb for each. I will also give you a sneak peek of all the books I am currently reading (as I never read just one book at a time) and I will also share any quotes that catch my eye.

A= Excellent Stuff

B= Really Good Read

C= Average

1. This week I have finished:

Hunter’s Way by Gerri Hill (Mystery) – A

Tori Hunter is one tough Homicide cop and has gone through 6 male partners in 3 years. She has got the reputation for being hard to get on with, and now she has been partnered with Samantha, Samantha gives back as good as she gets and a deep friendship is growing between the two. The two women are working on a serial killer case – four young women have been found murdered and their bodies discarded in a dumpster. At first it appears the link is that the girls are all prostitutes. The third victim alerts them to the fact that the three women are all lesbians – the fourth victim has now confirmed it. Tori and Samantha need to find out who is doing the killing quickly, which means Samantha is going to locations in the city she never dreamed existed.

The Chrysalids by John Wyndham (Science Fiction/Dystopian) – A

This is a dystopian book that I reread every couple of years – I never tire of it. Set in the future, a nuclear war has destroyed civilization and those who survived now live in isolated communities with their own sets of rules. David’s community is run by religious fundamentalists who are constantly alert for any deviation from what they perceive as the norm of God’s creation. Plants and animals are destroyed; babies are killed at birth, but if the deviation is discovered when they are older people are made to leave the community and live in the wild country. David and few of the other children have their own deviation that cannot be readily seen, they can talk to each other telepathically. As they grow older they realise that if this knowledge gets out their lives will be in danger, help is on the way from far, far away but will it arrive in time?

Attachments by Rainbow Rowell (Chick Lit) – C

Many of my reading buddies enjoyed this book but it just didn’t light my fires. Was a pleasant read and I enjoyed it, just didn’t LOVE it. The story centers around three main characters; Jennifer, Beth and the man who is invading their privacy, Lincoln. Lincoln is hired by a company to monitor the email going in and out of the workplace for inappropriate usage; and he is suppose to issue warnings on that misuse, including the use of email for personal chats. I am OK with this as this was company policy and all the staff was aware of the monitoring. BUT, Lincoln takes a step over the invasion of privacy line when the personal exchanges between Beth and Jennifer catches his eye and he continues to read the girls ‘chit chat’ emails without sending a caution. ‘Attachments’ follows all three characters as their stories unfold as they struggle with various problems.

It Happened One Summer by Polly Williams (Chick Lit) – B

Nell Stockdale has a complicated life, she is 37 and has just been made redundant; her daughter’s father has recently married and announced his young wife is expecting a baby; the man she considered to be the love of her life is now engaged to her sister and now her mother is seriously ill and needs someone to mind her. Nell is railroaded by her family to spend the summer in Cornwall caring for her mother. So was there an up to all this – well there might just be a chance for Nell to sort out what she really wants from life, make friends with her mother, bond with her little daughter and possibly live happily ever after. But like all good chick lit stories there is a hurdle on the horizon and dark secrets are about to be revealed. I liked Nell – she has serious flaws as a person, but she is facing them and growing as a person

2. My Current reads:

The books I am currently reading are:

Ghoul Interrupted by Victoria Laurie – A Paranormal mystery, I love this series and this is the latest release.

A soldier’s Tale by M.K. Joseph – Historical, a disturbingly haunting story set in WWII France – written by a New Zealander. Has been made into a movie of the same name

Liverpool Daisy by Helen Forrester – Another Historical story – is the story of a woman called Daisy who lives in Liverpool during the depression.

3. Quote/s for the week

This week I have two quotes.

The first is from page 30 of ‘It Happened One Summer’ by Polly Williams and is where Nell has just found out that her secure world is starting to crumble:

“…"…Nell spent the rest of the day utterly wretched. It was a real struggle to keep up appearances for Cass who clearly sensed something was afoot and became clingy and difficult. Only once Cass was in bed could Nell finally collapse into her own misery on the grey velvet sofa with wine and cooking chocolate…" …”

The second quote are the opening lines on page 1 of ‘Ghoul Interrupted’ by Victoria Laurie which gives an insight into the zany main character M.J who is a ghost buster.

“…I’ve always believed in ghosts. Actually, I had no choice in the matter. My childhood was full of encounters with disembodied voices, strange blue flashes, flickering shadows at the edge of my peripheral vision, and odd-looking orbs appearing right over my head. And then of course, my mother died and her ghost came to see me…”

* Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
* BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)

I am reading HUNTER’S WAY by Gerri Hall. Tori Hunter is one tough Homicide cop and has gone through 6 male partners in 3 years. She has got the reputation for being hard to get on with, and now she has been partnered with Samantha, Samantha gives back as good as she gets and a deep friendship is growing between the two. The two women are working on a serial killer case – 4 young women have been found murdered and their bodies discarded in a dumpster. At first it appears the link is that the girls are all prostitutes. The third victim alerts them to the fact that the three women are all lesbians – the fourth victim has now confirmed it. Tori and Samantha need to find out who is doing the killing quickly, which means Samantha is going to locations she never dreamed existed.

Here are my teasers:

Pg 93 – “…They were parked down the street from the most popular leather bar in the city. She’d watched as Sam’s eyes widened at the sight of a woman wearing a dog collar, being led into the bar on a leash.…”

Here is my reading summary for the week ending 8th January 2012.

Each week I am giving a short summary of the books I have finished and a bit of a blurb for each. I will also share with you what I am currently reading (as I never read just one book at a time) and any quotes that catch my eye.

1. This week I have finished:

· Space Scout: The Big Freeze by H. Badger (YA / Science Fiction) – B

A quick and easy space adventure as a 12-year-old Space Scout goes off on his first mission. To investigate if a distant planet is suitable for human habitation. His fellow travelers are a human/Arctic wolf clone and a space ship with a mind of her own.

· Castaway by Joanne Van Os (YA/Adventure)– B

The second in the exciting ‘Brumby Plains’ series finds Sam and his younger brother rescuing an illegal immigrant child who is the only survivor from a boat wreck. The two boys have to fight racism and the Australian Governments policy to prevent a little girl from being imprisoned. Another very good yarn from Australian author Joanne Van Os with a very topical subject of what to do with boat people and how they should be treated.

· The Voluptuous Delights of Peanut Butter and Jam by Lauren Lienbenberg (General Fiction) – A

Nominated for an Orange Literature award. An eight-year-old girl who lives in Rhodesia in the 1970s tells the story. It is set against a background of civil war. Even though Nyree’s family live in constant fear of the ‘Terrs’ (terrorists) the real threat to the happiness of the family comes from someone much more closer. A fascinating look at a childhood in another time and place and is highly recommended.

Dead Man’s Folly by Agatha Christie (Mystery) – C

First published in 1956, Hercule Poirot is asked to come to a country fete by a writer friend of his as she thinks there is something funny going on, and there is – murder!!!

2. My Current reads:

The books I am currently reading are:

HUNTER’S WAY by Gerri Hill – a police procedural mystery.

THE CHRYSALIDS by John Wyndham – this is a dystopian book that I reread every couple of years – I never tire of it.

ATTACHMENTS by Rainbow Rowell – nice fluffy chick lit.

3. Quote/s for the week

This week I have two quotes. The first is from page 125 of ‘The Voluptuous Delights of Peanut Butter and Jam’ and gives an example of the wonderful evocative writing in the book:

“…Then the mood changes. The slack, cicada-wrung lethargy of the day is plucked taut. Mom is tense, straining. Fear lies rolled up on the floor between us, like a damp, snotty piece of toilet paper, unacknowledged. Nobody wants to say it. Terrs. But they’re out there. Oupa props the rifle between his knees…”

The second is from page 29 of ‘Dead Man’s Folly’ it is a scene where Hercule Poirot has just been introduced to another character.

“…Captain Warbuton, who wore a check sports coat and had a vaguely horsy appearance, showed a lot of white teeth in a somewhat wolfish smile, then continued his conversation…”

The quote caught my eye because it left me wondering whether Captain Warbuton was ‘horsy’ or ‘wolfish’ in appearance – and my mind boggled as to how this character would look

I am reading THE VOLUPTUOUS DELIGHTS OF PEANUT BUTTER AND JAM by Lauren Liebenberg. Set in the African country of what use to be known as Rhodesia in the 1970s – the story is told by 8-year-old Nyree. The book was short listed for Orange Prize for New writers and I am reading it as part of my Orange January/July challenge

Here are my teasers:

“…Mozzies descend on us in the summer evenings, plunge their syringe-like proboscises into our flesh and drink like vampires, regardless of our blood’s quinine concentration…” – pg 51

“…The rainy season has begun and the nights, swollen and sullen, are lanced by dark, spiny curtains of rain…” – pg 65

Tell Me Your Dreams by Sydney Sheldon (Mystery) – A

Read in one sitting – wow what a ride! A series of horrific murders all point to one person. The story sucked me in from page one, then twisted and turned and did not let me go until the very last page! The end, when it sort of arrives, is chilling!

Traitor by Stephen Daisley (Historical) – D

I had high hopes for this book – the plot was full of potential. A New Zealand soldier and a Turkish doctor meet up on the battlefield of Gallipoli. Trouble is I just couldn’t get into this at all – the author just couldn’t pull it off for me. The story switched back and forth in time, and often took me a while to figure out that the change had been made. This confusion was in part due to the choice of the author to write with minimum speech punctuation which I really, really loathed. Traitor has won a swathe of literary awards so must be a good read for some people – but was not anywhere near acceptable for me. I suggest Daisley goes back to school and learn punctuation!

Dead Cold (aka Fatal Grace) by Louise Penny (Mystery) – A

My last book for 2011 – and what a great way to end the year. Quebec at Christmas is cold and snowy and a woman is murdered while watching a curling match on a solid iced in lake. Chief Inspector Armand Gamache and his colleagues arrive in the village to find out who the murderer is. And for such a small community there are many who have a very good reason to do the deed as the victim is a very unpleasant woman.

The Red Necklace by Sally Gardner (Historical) – A

This is the first book finished for 2012, and I have started the year on a high note. Set amidst the terror of the French revolution two young teens are caught up in the horrendous violence and brutality of the overthrow of royalty. Yann is a gypsy boy with tremendous powers that he has inherited from his mother – only he needs to learn that he has them. Sido is a young girl whose mentally unstable father has been blackmailed into allowing her to marry the deliciously evil Count Kalliovski.

2. My Current reads:

The books I am currently reading are THE VOLUPTUOUS DELIGHTS OF PEANUT BUTTER AND JAM by Lauren Liebenberg – an Orange Prize nominee that I am reading for Orange January. Also reading two really good YA books, firstly a great adventure set in the Top End of the Northern Territory CASTAWAY by Joanne van Os; and secondly a science fiction adventure SPACE SCOUT: THE BIG FREEZE by H. Badger.

3. Quote for the week

This week my quote is from page 160 of ‘The Red Necklace’

“…Sido didn’t answer. She has discovered a treasure all of her own: The golden power of silence…”

Here are my final Book Stats for 2011

I read a total of 126 books during 2011

My best book of the year – A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness

Average score: B

Average number of books per month: 10.5

Most popular Genre was a tie between Mystery and General Fiction

My Scoring System:

(A) – Amazing. I couldn’t put this book down. I carved out extra reading time just so I could finish it. This book got carted everywhere with me, read it over meals, was read at work and kept me up late at night. If this author has more work, I will certainly read it.

(B) – Great. I really enjoyed reading it.

(C) – Better to read than cleaning the bathroom, but had some serious flaws that stopped me from complete enjoyment. Did not overly like or dislike the book. Some parts of this book were enjoyable, but other parts were a real yawner.

(D) – It was OK – I finished it, but may have skipped parts. Whatever redeemable aspects there were to this book, they were not fleshed out enough for me to truly enjoy it.

Complete list broken down by score – and order read

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading.

Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

Grab your current read and open to a random page:

* Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
* BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
* Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

I am reading DEAD COLD by Louise Penny – here are my teasers:

Page 168:

“…How does someone get to be electrocuted in the middle of a frozen lake? You use to be able to electrocute someone in the bathtub but that was before most appliances had automatic shut-offs. Toss a toaster into a bath these days and all you’ll get is a blown fuse, a ruined appliance and a very p***ed-off spouse…”
