Here is my reading summary for the week ending 8th January 2012.
Each week I am giving a short summary of the books I have finished and a bit of a blurb for each. I will also share with you what I am currently reading (as I never read just one book at a time) and any quotes that catch my eye.
1. This week I have finished:
· Space Scout: The Big Freeze by H. Badger (YA / Science Fiction) – B
A quick and easy space adventure as a 12-year-old Space Scout goes off on his first mission. To investigate if a distant planet is suitable for human habitation. His fellow travelers are a human/Arctic wolf clone and a space ship with a mind of her own.
· Castaway by Joanne Van Os (YA/Adventure)– B
The second in the exciting ‘Brumby Plains’ series finds Sam and his younger brother rescuing an illegal immigrant child who is the only survivor from a boat wreck. The two boys have to fight racism and the Australian Governments policy to prevent a little girl from being imprisoned. Another very good yarn from Australian author Joanne Van Os with a very topical subject of what to do with boat people and how they should be treated.
· The Voluptuous Delights of Peanut Butter and Jam by Lauren Lienbenberg (General Fiction) – A
Nominated for an Orange Literature award. An eight-year-old girl who lives in Rhodesia in the 1970s tells the story. It is set against a background of civil war. Even though Nyree’s family live in constant fear of the ‘Terrs’ (terrorists) the real threat to the happiness of the family comes from someone much more closer. A fascinating look at a childhood in another time and place and is highly recommended.
- Dead Man’s Folly by Agatha Christie (Mystery) – C
First published in 1956, Hercule Poirot is asked to come to a country fete by a writer friend of his as she thinks there is something funny going on, and there is – murder!!!
2. My Current reads:
The books I am currently reading are:
HUNTER’S WAY by Gerri Hill – a police procedural mystery.
THE CHRYSALIDS by John Wyndham – this is a dystopian book that I reread every couple of years – I never tire of it.
ATTACHMENTS by Rainbow Rowell – nice fluffy chick lit.
3. Quote/s for the week
This week I have two quotes. The first is from page 125 of ‘The Voluptuous Delights of Peanut Butter and Jam’ and gives an example of the wonderful evocative writing in the book:
“…Then the mood changes. The slack, cicada-wrung lethargy of the day is plucked taut. Mom is tense, straining. Fear lies rolled up on the floor between us, like a damp, snotty piece of toilet paper, unacknowledged. Nobody wants to say it. Terrs. But they’re out there. Oupa props the rifle between his knees…”
The second is from page 29 of ‘Dead Man’s Folly’ it is a scene where Hercule Poirot has just been introduced to another character.
“…Captain Warbuton, who wore a check sports coat and had a vaguely horsy appearance, showed a lot of white teeth in a somewhat wolfish smile, then continued his conversation…”
The quote caught my eye because it left me wondering whether Captain Warbuton was ‘horsy’ or ‘wolfish’ in appearance – and my mind boggled as to how this character would look
Quite a variety in your reading this week. Thanks for sharing your thoughts
